Description

As a Product Design Intern, you will help create the next generation of hardware devices. You will gain hands-on experience bringing the design from concept to reality. Hands-On Design: 3D and 2D mechanical design of components, mechanisms, and electro-mechanical integrations (battery, antenna, PCB, interconnections). Prototyping & Testing: Help generate concepts, build prototypes, and perform rigorous mechanical, tolerance, and failure analysis to evaluate the design. Cross-Functional Collaboration: Partner with Hardware, Program Management, Industrial Design, Operations, Manufacturing, and Reliability teams to ensure designs meet aesthetic and functional goals.

Responsibilities

  • Support design, engineering, prototyping, and validation activities in both laboratory and factory environments.
  • Create 3D models and 2D drawings, and perform tolerance analysis to ensure precise fit and assembly.
  • Conduct engineering data collection and leverage statistical or AI-driven tools to analyze results and inform design decisions.
  • Optimize component designs for high-volume manufacturing, applying DFM/DFA principles for injection molding, sheet metal, and CNC machining.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to support factory builds and perform root-cause/failure analysis (may include up to 20% travel).
  • Communicate technical specifications, test results, and design updates clearly and effectively to internal teams and external vendors.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Currently pursuing a BS, MS, or PhD in Mechanical Engineering, Materials Science, Product Design, or a related field of study.
  • Available to join an internship for 6-12 months full-time.
  • At the end of the internship, you must return to school to continue your education or the internship must be the last requirement for you to graduate.
  • Proficiency verbal and written communication in both English and Chinese

Preferred Qualifications

  • Proficiency in 3D CAD software (Siemens NX preferred).
  • Hands-on prototyping experience utilizing 3D printers, CNC mills, lathes, and/or other fabrication methods.
  • Knowledge of materials science fundamentals, spanning plastics, metals, adhesives, glass, ceramics, composites, and coatings.
  • Familiarity with manufacturing and tolerancing, including DFM, DFA, statistical tolerance analysis, and GD&T.
  • Understanding of engineering analysis, including Finite Element Analysis (FEA) theory, general mechanical principles, and statistical tools.
  • Familiarity with electro-mechanical integration, specifically packaging components like batteries and wireless antennas into mechanical enclosures.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, fueled by a genuine curiosity for how things work.
  • Highly proactive and adaptable, with the initiative to drive tasks forward and the flexibility to pivot when needed.
  • Strong organizational skills, with the ability to manage multiple tests and project requests simultaneously.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication, paired with the ability to thrive in a collaborative, team-based environment.
